Last weekend we took our junior high Youth group to San Antonio and the day I got back my wife had an amazing surprise waiting for me. That’s right she handed me the Transformers DVD right as I walked through the door. This exchange was completely unexpected and I informed her that even-though I had been gone for two days it was imperative that I watch the entire DVD that night. Thankfully she understood and I was able to partake of the life changing cinema that is the Transformers movie. Much later the next day (I slept in until 11:00) it occurred to me that surprises are one of the small things in life that keep it exciting. For some of you getting a Transformers DVD is probably not all that great (shame on you) but think of the last time you were taken off guard by the actions of someone that blessed you.
Surprises affect us much the same way when they come from the God who loves us. Recently in a Bible study group one of our friends told us of his feeling that God was calling him to make a change in his life. As we talked about the possibilities we recalled all of the ways God has surprised us with His plan for our lives and how His plans had nothing to do with our plans. So, the question is when was the last time you were surprised by God? What was your response? If it has been a while I hope you are once again surprised and awed by the God of all creation.

Transformers is awesome. I saw it in theatres and downloaded the soundtrack as soon as I got home.
Honestly I can’t remember the last time God surprised me. In fact I can think of lots of time I have felt disappointed. My family has gone through many trials over the last 5 years and I always wonder when they will stop. Not yet seems to be the answer.
Comment by curtismchale November 2, 2007 @ 1:36 pmI am right there with you; my family has had a very difficult year that seems to just keep piling on the bad news. We have drawn a lot on our community of faith and the promise that, “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.” James 1:12
Comment by rebelbasewoodley November 2, 2007 @ 2:11 pmNice thought. Here is a perplexing and perhaps convicting follow-up thought: we don’t expect to be surprised by God. At times, we think we have the Divine so figured out that we miss the majesty and the awe of His glory. Indeed, we numb ourselves to not expect anything other than the ordinary from God. How tragic indeed.
Comment by Justin Taylor November 14, 2007 @ 10:31 pmGood stuff Justin! We try to make God fit into our Theology, and leave little room for Him to be God.
